Why is it every so often we long to be spending time 'away from it all'?

Sure the pressures of modern life can be exacting on our system, but a good weekend usually sorts that stress out. To really get away from it all because something in you says "OK, time for a break" means more than getting away from the daily stresses of our lives - its a re-connecting to that part of ourselves which needs recharging. The Advantages and Disadvantages of Travelling Alone

One of the main purposes of travel is to gain experiences that allow us to grow and develop as individuals and it is important that people travel the way that bests suits them at a particular time. For example, I like to go on adventure holidays and this invariably includes a small group and expert guide, and I frequently participate in writing retreats around the world with like-minded people. However for me, the real joy of travelling has always been to take off on my own and just 'see' what comes along the way. Of course this can sometimes be fraught with frustrations, difficulties and even dangers.

Advantages of travelling alone

• Freedom Most people who travel alone generally cite freedom as the great motivating factor: freedom to please themselves, go where and when they want, change their plans on a whim when they hear about something that is a 'must' to see, and to accept spontaneous invitations by locals.
• No compromises This is associated with the previous point. Even if travelling with one other person, be it friend, colleague, lover or spouse, there will always be some compromises required. Not everyone has the same interests or the same energy levels, some people need to be emotionally supported all the time, others are apathetic, some have different attitudes to time. With solo travel, there is no peer pressure over finances, the unspoken need to divide up restaurant bills equally, or guilt trips when you want to go off on your own for a while.
• Meeting people Travelling solo does not mean that you will always be alone. In fact, it allows you to meet more people because other tourists and locals find an individual traveller more approachable than those in a tightly-knit group. Also, people in groups have very little need to reach out to others for communication. I have met more people, had more interesting conversations and invitations and made more long-term friends while eating alone in foreign restaurants or sitting alone at bars. But then I am gregarious. Travelling alone allows you to choose the people you wish to spend time with rather than having to face the day-after-day annoyances of the inevitable clowns and whingers found in any large group.
• Discoveries There is a real sense of discovery involved in travelling on your own, and that includes self-discovery. You don't have to rely on an often ill-informed guide to lead you around on a leash, and there's the surprise and thrill when you find something you weren't expecting, like the time I became lost and ended up in a small Bavarian village with a monastery that contained a library with tens of thousands of Medieval manuscripts. Travelling alone allows you to discover more about yourself as you overcome simple challenges such as missing a bus or boat and realizing there is no other for a day or a week. Then there is the sense of achievement when solving much more challenging problems like finding yourself lost in a strange town at midnight or running out of money on a holiday weekend with no ATM in sight and the banks closed.

Disadvantages of travelling alone

• The single supplement For those who like to stay in decent hotels, there is the unfair single supplement that can add thousands to the cost of your trip.
• Lack of help There is no one to watch your luggage while you go to the restrooms at airports or train stations, no one to help with persistent touts, no one to be there for you if you get sick or if you are being stalked or harassed by a determined male in the street.
• Photos There are times when I would like to have had more taken of myself in certain places, but there again, there are always people willing to snap one or two for you.

I know there will be times in the future when I will travel as part of a group out of choice because I want to visit areas where it is just not possible or sensible for a woman alone, or because I wish to be with family or like-minded people. However, due to my particular personality traits, my preference is to travel alone. I guess it really doesn't matter how people travel, but that they travel.

Exploring the Great Outdoors - Why I Crave Adventure in My Life

Some of my earliest childhood memories are of the summers spent with my father camping with his troop of Boy Scouts in upstate New York. At camp every day was a new adventure filled with the smells of wood fires, pine trees; the earthy scent of forest floor, and catfish being fried in a skillet. I learned many skills at camp such as catching and cleaning a catfish, how to paddle a canoe, as well as learning to swim. I view the outdoors as a big classroom where we learn about ourselves and the world around us. We discover how to live, and how to survive and in the process learn about who we are and what we are capable of. All the lessons my father taught me about the outdoors remain as indispensable today as they were then. I plan to pass these skills on to my grandchildren when they are ready.

I recall feeling that my world made sense to me while at camp. We worked on the basics skills like chopping firewood so we could cook our food and stay warm at night. We fished so we would have a variety of things to eat for dinner, and we slept out under the stars so we could observe the starry night sky and wonder about the vast universe and all its beauty. At home, I did not see my day to day routines as being quite a meaningful. The food never tasted as good, and the sky was never as clear. So began my love affair with the Great Outdoors.

In retrospect; I guess it is not so surprising that I now own an Adventure Travel company. I love helping people create unforgettable outdoors experiences of their own. I had never planned to be an Adventure Travel professional. I just always remained receptive to opportunities as they came my way to travel and to spend time in nature. Being in nature brought me closer to that feeling I had as a child, the feeling that I was connected to everything around me and where everything made perfect sense.

So why do we crave adventure in our lives? I know that for me, the feeling of seeing a mountain vista for the first time, or connecting with a lively salmon and feeling its strength, makes me feel more alive. Perhaps it is not death we fear, but rather the fear of not living life to its fullest. Let Me Whet Your Appetite - Consider Going on a Very Special Unique Adventure

Many are always looking for something different. There are those who would appreciate a unique and different type of holiday or vacation from what they may have been used to, and they may not wish to risk what is suggested here. There can be various reasons for considering it a risk. Let me deal with these.

It has been a longing in my heart to lead a small group to what is called the Holy Land; to Israel. In a few minds thoughts of it being all religious arise. Such thoughts can be dispelled immediately.

Over the years it has been my privilege to lead groups of around thirty people to Israel, and I have led a Leader's party where those travelling were being introduced to the land, to lead their own tours and pilgrimages.

If you, and a few of your friends, have always wanted to visit Jerusalem and Galilee then perhaps this is the right time.

What is involved and what might be the itinerary?

We fly to Tel Aviv and would be met by a coach, or people carrier, suitable for the size of the party, and having come through the airport formalities and collecting our luggage the party would be driven up to Jerusalem. Normally, I have stopped just outside the city to give people the time to reflect upon where they are going. One ought not to rush into Jerusalem.

The hotel to which we would be going is central, situated, opposite the Damascus Gate, and convenient for visiting significant sites in the heart of Jerusalem. The Old City walls are right across the road from the hotel lounge. The rooms are comfortable and the food is good and the staff so welcoming and friendly.

By the way, the hotel is right next to Golgotha and Calvary and The Garden Tomb is adjacent.

There are certain places one has to and should visit. Our driver would take us around the walls of the Old City on the first morning to familiarise everyone with the geographical lay-out, before driving to the summit of the Mount of Olives overlooking the old and new city.

If I may be allowed a personal comment, I think it is the best sight I have seen in the whole world. When I have mentioned this previously to larger parties no-one has challenged or disagreed. The view seems to imprint itself on one's memory.

Walking down the slopes of the Mount of Olives to the Garden of Gethsemane evokes various emotions, because this is the identical routed down which Jesus Christ rode on Palm Sunday. There is no other path!

Then it is off to Bethlehem, which lies six miles to the south of Jerusalem, and to the Shepherd's Fields, and later, to explore the compact streets of the Old City itself and to visit perhaps on more than one occasion the Wailing or Western Wall. Of course, not all this on the first day!

The Memorial to the Holocaust at Yad Vashem is a must, and then to view the model of the Temple adds to the rich tapestry of our adventure.

Jericho, Qumran at the north end of the Dead Sea, the ascent of Masada by cable car and a swim in the Dead Sea can be easily done in one day. That has invariably been a highlight of the visit for many.

Following a week in bustling Jerusalem it is up north some 80 miles to Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee, and the more than comfortable Ron Beach Hotel with its superb cuisine is right on the shoreline.

From there we visit the Mount of Beatitudes, Capernaum, the majestic Mount Hermon in the north of Israel, and the River Jordan.

Our route north can include a visit to a diamond factory, where there is always someone who buys!

The picturesque Caesarea, by the Mediterranean Sea, with its ancient and so well preserved theatre can also be part of our plans.

No, it is not all go! I usually have two rest days if that is what people wish, but should they want to visit another salient site I will take them.

Relaxing evenings are filled with walks to the King David Hotel for coffee, or for ice cream at bustling Ben Yehuda Street, and that is when so many questions just tumble out from people.

The State of Oregon is located in the Pacific Northwest. It's sheer height and size make it a very moist area with much rainfall and snow as well, which contribute to the massive quantity of water and waterfalls in this part of Oregon.

Barr Creek Falls, Jackson County, Oregon

Barr Creek Falls is a multi-stepped waterfall in Rogue River Canyon. It drops 60 feet then falls another 30 feet, then plunges 150 feet to the canyon floor. As the creek does not hold a large volume of water, the falls vary from a torrent in the spring during the melt to a smaller more delicate flow when late summer occurs. Total height of these falls in 240 feet, with 3 drops and an average width of 20 feet.

Beaver Falls, Columbia County, Oregon

Beaver Creek sheets out over a basalt lava flow and careens into a large pool below. These falls are also based on waterflow with the spring flow being quite large and dangerous to a smaller flow in the summer, allowing visitors the chance to experience the falls from below. Height is 40 feet, 1 drop and an average width of 30 feet.

Other falls include Mill Creek Falls, North Falls, Spirit Falls, Alsea Falls and more. Nevis

Nevis is a small island located close to the end of the Lesser Antilles Archipelago, about 2 miles from the island of St. Kitts. The "Giant" Adventure in Bali

Hidden away from the bounds of modern life, great creatures live in the vivid green jungle surrounding a humble traditional village: Gianyar Regency's Taro village is home to 27 elephants who live well under the care of the Elephant Safari Park.

The nearly two-hour drive to the elephant park begins in the civilized heart of the Balinese capital, Denpasar, and passes through quiet countryside to end in a narrow lane surrounded by a dense tropical forest. Friendly staff is ready to greet us once we alight from our motorized transportation. We pass through the entrance to a gallery and information centre, where we can view elephant artifacts and update our knowledge on the pachyderm through the text accompanying attractive pictures.The scientific material provided here introduces us to the world of elephants on every continent, providing a very good introduction before we meet the living giants.

The park is open daily from 8 a.m. through 6 p.m., and early-bird visitors can have a most tiring yet exciting experience in elephant bathing: These great citizens of the world are ridden by their mahout to the main pond to enjoy its cool waters, then go on to the elephant-size open bathroom. Not a morning person to brave traveling so early for such an experience? Well, why not stay in the park's exotic and luxurious lodge! Other delightful activities on offer at the park are the elephant tour, the elephant creativity show, and elephant feeding.

The elephant tour seems to be the most popular activity, in which up to two visitors can climb into the saddle safely attached to an elephant's back. Once you're seated securely, your mahout will drive the grey giant along a track that runs about a kilometer through the middle of the dense forest for a tour past farms, through village streets, and back to the park. The elephant I rode was called Fitri. At the grand age of 43, she is the oldest elephant in the park. Sitting on her back while she was moving along the flat track felt like cruising on a bumpy road in a five-star car, say a Jaguar.

The fresh scent from green farms, mixed with the strong odour of soil, carried on a,soft breeze straight into my nose for a calming effect. A soundtrack of melodious birds and other sounds made by the jungles' creatures completed the natural, cozy atmosphere. Before I knew it, Fitri had pushed open the park entrance with its trunk and my lovely, romantic tour was coming to an end.

Feeling tired after the 30-minute elephant ride? Hold on! Before going on to taste the delicious international fare in the park's restaurant, we must first give our giant host a chance to drink from its water trough and to play in the main pond. There, the park's resident photographer is ready to capture our best shot on this great-great-grandchild of the mammoth. Ready? One, two, three... cheers! The elephant will raise its trunk or spray the water happily for a picture-perfect pose.

In the elephant creativity show, we can watch some well-educated and talented elephants paint colourful canvases, solve maths problems, shoot hoops, and give us garlands to wear around our necks. The shows are on daily at i t a.m., 1 p.m., and 3.30 p.m. Don't miss it!

The elephants' paintings are on sale in the park's gift shop, and the money from their purchase goes to the Waikambas elephant conservation centre in Lampung province, South Sumatra. After all the excitement, my adventure in the park was not yet over. On the way out, I made a very short side trip to a srhall pond in the park where another giant lives. The pond is home to a fish called Arapaima gigas, the largest freshwater fish in the world and a native of the Amazon River. When at last I walk to the exit, I'm carrying an experience as colorful as the myriad orchids that bloom alongside the path.
